Another quick video update of the current progress :

I am discovering that my game is hard to play when you are this tired. You get distracted by all the pretty colors.

salty food makes for a good second wind working into these late hours. Our hero jumps and runs, and the gold mine is drawn up. we are putting together the links from each drawing to the next, which is proving to be no trivial task.

4/3/2010 written by stevem Exiled Racer Final Update
There's still plenty of time before 24 hours are up, but my eyes have glazed over. Here are two final screenshots demonstrating the:
'before race start' state

and immediately 'ater race start' state
.
The system has figured out the system IDs from the internal lookup table for this race, and added them to the in-game waypoint system using the javascript API. At this point the system will start logging every few seconds to see where you're. Once progress has been made any dupes in the system are removed, and a time interval is calculated, rince repeat until we get to our final destination at which point all logging is removed from the database and the ultimate time interval for the race is calculated, and recorded on the Best Times page.

Currently there is only 1, preset race available (and it's a long one, 194 jumps). However with the way this was designed a few more hours would yield a system with client created race routes, etc.

This web app was created using the PHP 5 + Kohana framework and a MySql 5 DB. The app is running on a quad core dedicated server, and since it is only usable from within the EVE IGB (@ http://exiledcollective.com/), source code is available upon request.

Ah, ever enjoyed a nice stroll down a featureless eerily white plane that extends about 700 pixels in one direction and about 500 in another?  Well my good sir, you might be a flat lander....and because you are, I can look down my nose at you.  Also you might inhabit the oddly nondescript city of.....%s city, a odd place, one inhabited long ago by cannibalistic geometric figures.

Thank god, or if god isn't your cup of tea goodness, for the ethnic cleansing!  Those squares have all but been eliminated.  While I bet more then a few of you readers might be saying, "oh dear lord, what kind of soft core pornographic and horrific site have I found!" I would say, "wut?" because I don't think you will see many naked ladies here....or naked men....unless I draw some.....women....not men....anyways....

So far, the purply square that you used to control, you know...the one I never mentioned in the first post? oh right....You used to play a magenta quadrilateral with some special properties, firstly all your angles are 90 degrees....not in kelvin...or pi/2 if you are so inclined more pure values.....also you shot stuff....and by stuff I mean bullets....or at least we pretend they are bullets, in reality we could assume what ever abstract imagery we wanted....BUT NOT ANY LONGER...... now our heroic purplie loser has several new tricks....firstly....THE DUDE HAS A KNIFE.....also, hes got a cape.....oh and now he cannot randomly shoot people while stealthed, but he can knife a bitch....oh yea, he can go stealthed too.....bad ass right?

more after some of those pickled eggs....

Here's a screenshot of the game in action:

This screenshot shows the main screen giving you a short background story related to an old EVE event. Entering the race gives you the rules and instructions on how to start. Still working on the system that automatically adds the waypoints to the in-game mapping system and progress tracker.

So, we've gotten quite a ways in the last 9-ish hours. I have a video for you guys, it has a temporary level, and the latest main character.

Also, I have a jar of pickled eggs, but all the eggs are on the bottom and all the peppers are on the top. I'm determined to get to the eggs before dawn.

After getting down some sort of a game plan shortly before noon, Alex and I began work. We found a java 2d game engine called GTGE and have been learning it on the fly. One hour in, we came up with the name: Hard Boiled Hobo. Our hero is kicked out from his starving family because of the great depression, and must seek out money for food and resources by raiding an abandoned mineshaft and a Mayan temple.

I have been working on developing platforming elements, hit detection, and animation. Alex has been drawing art for the last 9 hours on his awesome touch pad pen thingy. We're looking to have this going nicely by dawn.

Currently, the gold mine is almost done being drawn (7megs of maps), and our hero can navigate a cave without falling through the floor. unless we want him to. more on that later.

My computer just crashed.

I got it running again, but it completly corrupted one of my object files. Fortunately it was  minor file and I was able to recreate it in a minute, but a bit unnerving nonetheless.

On a more positive note, I now actually have something resembling gameplay.

Who like shitty art and complex game logic?  Oh, I know, NOBODY!  wait, that doesn't sound correct.  True gamers know that graphics are just eye candy, like clothing on a woman.....its all just for looks....and warmth.... What is really important is that shes naked, I mean, that the game play is fun.

Our team is attempting to make our game play, much like a naked and receptive woman, smooth, and friendly.  But it should still be hard, rather hard, so that you feel like you have accomplished something at the end, and extravagant ending, and good climax.  The goal here is to reduce the refractory period of frustration and shame that is often experienced with challenging games while on the other hand not making it to easy.

Our main idea is that the play is in control on an entity and they are surrounded by other squares, well really rectangles but no one really cares about uncool people, and every so often two are paired off as red and green, and they decide that red has a burning hunger for the lines of green.  red stalks the green rectangle and captures it, slowly devouring it.

Your job, if you are a bad enough dude, is to stop this.....for some reason....and if you do a well enough job the squares, rectangles...whatever, start following you....again for some reason....then there are these blue guys, oh did I forget to mention them?  They walk around like they are having a fit of some sort, and if you arn't king of the squares then they get you.  So the moral of the story is, naked women are often on my mind......

Made lots of progress with the physics. Sprites are mostly done, but my artist has to leave for a while. Gameplay should be forthcoming

It's 6.5 hrs into the jam.  Did concept and modeled the character.  Also had rigging and all crucial animations done.  about to get some inspirations for environment meshes.  Planning to have all meshes done tonight.  Textures can be done tomorrow.

Exiled Racer is a basically a time trial system for use within the EVE Online IGB (in game browser). The IGB is based on the Chromium project. This web app is being written using PHP 5.3 + MySQL + HTML5. That's the basics for now, more to come later.

4 hours in, and I am just coding the character. Up till now I have been coding framework and physics. No hitches so far.
